Weddings at St Mary's Send FAQs (Frequently asked questions)
Who can be married in St Mary's?
- Anyone who lives in the parish of Send, (which includes Send Marsh).
- Anyone living outside the parish who worships regularly at St Mary's.
- Anyone who can demonstrate a bona fide and continuing connection with St Mary's Church.
How old must someone be to get married?
- At least 16 years old.
- Persons who are 16 or 17 years old need the consent of parents or guardians.
When can people get married in St Mary's?
- Theoretically, any day between 8.00am and 6.00pm.
- Only after the necessary legal preliminaries, usually the publication of banns, but sometimes a common licence or special licence.
- At a time convenient to the minister.
How much does it cost?
- The basic cost of a marriage service in the Church of England is currently about £250.
- There are additional fees for organ, choir, and bells, heating, and recording the service.
- The total cost depends on what you want.
Do I have to be a Christian to be married in church?
- No. But as the marriage vows are made 'in the presence of God' one assumes you would be sympathetic to the Christian faith and the rites and traditions of the Christian Church.
Can we be married in church if we're not baptised (christened)?
- Only if you live in the parish.
Do we have to go to church to be married at St Mary's?
- No and yes.
- No, because no one can force you. But then if you're not interested in developing your faith why do you want to get married in church?
Yes, because in some circumstances regular attendance at public worship is a requirement before banns can be published.
Can we be married in St Mary's if either of us is divorced?
- Maybe. In some circumstances I am prepared to conduct marriages for people who are divorced. We would need to talk about what is possible.
Can we be married in Church if we've already got children?
What about confetti?
- Fine. As long as it is not too near the porch.
What about photographs?
- Sure. But not during the ceremony.
We're married already and we had a Civil ceremony. Can we have our marriage blessed in church?
- Can a fish swim? Of course you can. I look forward to talking with you and making the arrangements. We'll need to think carefully about what you want. 'Blessings' range from being very simple and quiet occasions to more elaborate events that can be very similar to weddings.
Can we have a ring blessed?
We've got an Wedding Anniversary approaching, can we do something to celebrate it in church?
- That's a great idea. You could do this privately and quietly on your own or more publically with family and friends. Occasions like this can be reassuring times of thanksgiving and re-commitment. How about renewing your vows? Let's get together and sort something out. I'll be glad to help.
