Sunday Club aims to provide a happy environment in which children between the ages of three and twelve can learn about God's love for them. The club meets regularly on the second and fourth Sunday of each month during term time in the Church Room from 10.30 am to 11.30 am and the children are encouraged to attend Church with their parents for special services. During the school holidays, we also meet in the sunshine in the churchyard for story time.
We begin each meeting worshipping together in the chapel area of the Church Room. There we share our news and celebrate recent birthdays, before we learn about the theme for that day and join together in prayer and song.
Then we divide into age groups for the teaching session. We use the Scripture Union's new Bible based learning resource called LIGHT, which is designed for ministry with children. The programme provides material suitable for use with each age group. Each session includes a bible story, discussion, a game and a craft activity. The children respond well to the materials and the atmosphere is always lively. We finish our time together with drinks and a biscuit.
We try hard to maintain close links with the congregation at St Mary's:
We organise our Christmas Party upstairs in the Church Room at the same time as the Christmas Fayre. This is open to all children and is usually a very enjoyable occasion.
We make the Christingles for the service in Church when the children bring in their collecting candles, which make quite a contribution to the money raised for the work of the Children's Society.
During the Autumn term the children work very hard, in a very short time, to prepare for the Nativity Service which they perform in Church. They enjoy the performance, which is generally much appreciated by their parents and the congregation, and they are grateful for the books they receive from St Mary's in recognition of their attendance at Club.
We have create posters and banners for display in Church and on special occasions come to Church to sing one of the songs that we have been learning recently.
New members are always very welcome and we are happy for parents to stay as well for as long as necessary for the children to feel settled.
